A brief — изложение дела клиента, приготовленное адвокатом для выступления в суде. Отсюда произошло слово briefcase (портфель). A dock brief — это бесплатный адвокат, назначенный судом для защиты обвиняемого, который беден или по какой-либо другой причине не в состоянии платить за защиту сам (dock = скамья подсудимых).
